Flood

Yesterday it rained. You know sometimes, during a storm, it absolutely pours down for a couple of minutes and then passes by? Well it did that level of rain for 4 hours where I was working. It was startling, almost biblical. In the afternoon it snowed for a bit, then rained some more.

There were big puddles, I knew a local branch of my work had to shut because of a power failure due to the floods, but what I didn't know was that the exits from the city were flooded and the traffic was at a standstill in most directions. I swept off the snow and got into my car.

For the next hour, I only moved forward because someone else in the queue had turned around and tried a different route. I usually like my car, but after an hour and half of sitting on the same bit of road, with the local radio telling me all roads were gridlocked, the airport was flooded, no trains could get past Bristol and people had to be rescued from their cars because they were trapped in flood water, I would have liked to be somewhere else quite a lot. It was cold, I had one CD (apart from children's story ones), no food and I hadn't visited the bathroom before I set off.

I've never appreciated home as much as when I finally walked through the door, two hours after I'd set off, having travelled less than ten miles. Mr Bethnoir had hot food and a cup of tea ready for me and all was warm and lovely. Nothing like a little discomfort to make one feel grateful for the basic things in life. Today the sun is out and my heart is lifted.
